The Anishinaabeg tribes, who named the peninsula "Menecing", brought their sick to the peninsula to recover in its healthful atmosphere. During the 1790s, the British built the first buildings on the Island. A blockhouse and storage structures were built at Gibraltar Point in 1794.
The island community is considered to be the largest urban car-free community in North America.
Today the island is well known as a popular destination for Toronto residents to get away from the city and enjoy the sun covered beach. And of course there's Billy Bishop Airport, which is just neat to watch planes taking off and landing on such a small runway.
